WAXworks at Triskelion Arts
In September 2006, Triskelion officially became the new performance venue for WAXworks. WAXworks is an inclusive performance showcase that offers new and experienced artists the opportunity to present their work on a professional stage with substantial and versatile lighting, sound and technical systems. Any kind of stage work is welcome - we invite dance, theater, music, video, performance art, poetry, comedy, juggling, singing, puppetry, acrobatics, monologues or anything else that can be performed on a stage. There is no audition process and few technical limitations.
WAXworks is designed to help artists advance their creative process by viewing their work through the objective eyes of a live, enthusiastic audience: guided by the WAX staff, audience members are invited to share their constructive criticisms, reactions and ideas with the artists in an anonymous written format. An involved audience is a supportive audience. For more information or if you have questions about the application and booking process, contact WAXworks Production Director Alexandra Burley via voicemail at: 718.599.7997 or waxworks@wax205.com

Where We Fall
a shared evening of works
October 8-9, 2010. 8pm Two casts of dancers, multiple collaborating artists. Crafted by Julia Y. Edwards and Jahna Bobolia
Tickets: $15
Email info@triskelionarts.org for reservations.
Choreographer and co-creator Jahna Bobolia’s work for this evening of dance includes three pieces entitled, Collapsing Elbows, More Please, and What Holds You Up? The three works are intertwined together by an investigation into the way moving bodies mirror the delicate organics of human relationships. The work is an exercise in subtlety, rhythm, and performing difference through physicality. Each piece attempts to create a textured movement landscape that delineates the nuances of non-verbal communication, the primordial conversation that can occur between two persons, two atoms two elements. The work is a vignette about the idiosyncratic natural beauty of communicating bodies.
Julia Y. Edwards, choreographer and co-creator premieres Gnosis, a work of kinesthetic notions sewn together like a patchwork quilt. Gnosis gathers its movement fabric from somatic experiences, emotional sensations, psychosocial observation, enteric knowledge and visceral decision-making. Edwards is deeply interested in abstractly exploring the human experience through movement. Through thick collaboration with fabric sculptor Margret Carlson, Edwards explores costumes that are an extension of the self versus the body only and the many areas in between. This work was created in part through The Field’s Artist Residency program, supported by the Tides Foundation.
Rounding off the evening, guest Artist Jessica Jolly has been commissioned to premiere a new duet choreographed on Julia and Jahna. In every relationship, there are two people with two ideas about what they want from the other. This dance is about expectation and disappointment, manipulation and resistance, and the compromises and sacrifices we make to achieve fleeting moments of perfect synchronicity.

Jessica Gaynor Dance
November 18-21, 2010. 8pm
Jessica Gaynor Dance creates work that utilizes extreme physicality, cerebral patterning and sophisticated formal structures in an exploration of the complexities of human experience. This new evening length piece, performed by an ensemble of seven dancers, investigates issues of space and the ways in which it dictates our daily experiences. From cramped places to developing landscapes, the choreography explores density, facings, spatial patterns, and pathways as the space both contracts and expands.

BUJINKAN BUDO TAIJUTSU
Developed by the legendary ninja and samurai of feudal Japan, Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu comprises ancient Japanese kobudo martial arts. These arts thrive under the direct guidance of Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, grandmaster of nine distinct martial traditions including Togakure Ryu Ninpo. Hatsumi Sensei is the last and only true ninja soke (grandmaster). The term "ninpo" refers to the group of martial traditions and philosophy that were utilized to combat the extreme violence that plagued Japan during the Sengoku ("Warring States") Era and directly afterwards. Bujinkan unarmed and armed movement focus on the efficient use of the entire body ("taijutsu") to achieve maximum effectiveness. It is not a sport. Rather, training is centered on jissen gata combat fighting.
Training is lead by Shidoshi Orin Paliwoda. Membership will be selective.

Poi with Claire de Luxe.
Poi was an ancient Maori art used for dance, play, agility, and self-defense training. Today, poi has developed into a dynamic and complex art form that is often combined with fire. Here, poi is taught with an eye for movement as opposed to simply a series of static tricks to be mastered. Class includes warm-up and cool-down as well as plenty of opportunity for questions, improvisation, and experimentation. We will spin and move to a variety of music to encourage different styles and flow. We introduce and review basic fire safety methods, and the last class always includes the opportunity to light up (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios).
Fall poi sessions are starting back in fall of 2010! DETAILS TBA
Email ddzzee@gmail.com with questions
All sessions are 10 weeks, with the last class being a fire performance class.
Poi 3 and Poi 4: Tuesdays 8:00-9:30
Poi 2: Wednesdays 6:30-8:00
At Triskelion Arts, Studio B
Please try to attend all of your classes, as poi is a vocabulary based on building blocks. If you MUST miss a class, you can make it up (up to two only) during this session only by attending another level class.
Poi 2
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of simple poi moves. We continue adding to our poi vocabulary, building transitions, and facilitating experimentation.
Poi 3
Students should be comfortable with basic poi vocabulary. We will be building on the basics to develop a comfort and freedom with flow, layering moves on top of one another to begin to create true flow with the poi. Stalls, turns, and transitions will be essential. We will also begin exploring new categories of moves to keep your technique exciting.
Poi 4
A lot of focus will be spent this session on choreography, sequencing moves, transitions, and experimenting with movement. We will do drills to open up new patterns within old moves and work on opening up the possibilities of poi play within the context of the framework you already know.
**Note: Poi 3 and Poi 4 will meet in the same time period. Classes will be on opposite sides of the room and separate instruction will be given to each side, with personal attention given in equal measure.
Enrollment:
Cost is $180 for the 10-week session. A payment of $90 via Google Checkout will confirm your enrollment (I will send you an invoice when you register). The remaining balance can be paid on the first day of class.
"I always found Claire's poi classes really inspiring because I don't consider spinning poi easy at all and I'm not always good at taking on challenges. But there was never any sort of pressure or judgment in her classes regardless of my attitude on any given day. And she is very honest and genuine in her own exploration and learning process as it goes on side by side with her students. I loved it, and I look forward to taking more poi clases in 2010!"
