Today, The Sky is Falling
April 9-11, 2010. 8pm
Today, The Sky is Falling, Leanne Schmidt and Company’s fourth evening-length work, offers a humorous, peculiar and unusual demonstration of bravery as three individual’s put themselves on the line and illustrate what makes their “sky fall”. Poking fun at life’s mini-dramas, this work is composed through a collection of personal tragedies, combing physicality and comedy improvisation techniques. The result is a journey that is rich in metaphor, evokes empathy and is supremely honest. Getting Back to why - A Workshop to Awaken Your 'Artist'
Intermediate/Advanced dancers are welcome to join!
Come join Leanne Schmidt for a 6 evening, afforable, fall workshop dedicated to indulging our artist-self. Join us for just an evening or all 6 classes.
Our artistic life can have its ups and downs. We often times get too busy, or can't afford class. Or maybe we've been away from it for a while now and need a swift kick in the ass to get in shape and remember our artist-self ("Hello, this is your passion calling! Why have you been ignoring me?"). For these 6 weeks we'll get back in and remember what it feels like to move, fly, indulge, question, and make artistic choices. Each class will include a technique warm up, phrase work, improvisational games, performance play, and plenty of discussion.
After an easy warm-up including specific initiations, weight changes, testing balance, adjusting alignment and spatial exploration, phrase work will be emphasized. We will work within a large range of movement styles from small quirky movements to large, sweeping across-the-floor phrases. Through phrase work, we will explore different qualities of the moving body, the theatrical possibilities of our movement, individual expression and performance style. The dancers will be asked to strip away the "performer" we are trying to portray and indulge into a real representation of ourselves in the performance space. This workshop aims to provide a venue for discussing and sharing thoughts and ideas about performance. Individual choices allowing each student to find their own voice within the workshop and ultimately as a performer.

THE WORK:
CLOWN & COMEDY
This workshop will be very much looking to find what is uniquely funny about each person and how they can make that accessible to an audience. When people have fun and play instinctively it is then that they start to play the fool, tell stories, joke and discover their creativity. It will concentrate mainly on the clown (non big shoes/squirty flowers kind) and the pleasure to be ridiculous in the space. The clown moves from one flop to the next always happy and optimistic to be playing before an audience. There are many confusions and disasters in a clown show but there are never any doubts. The clown is joyful, playful, mischievous and full of fantasy.
COMEDIC CHARACTER
Have you been storing away little ideas for possible comedic characters to develop, but never had the chance to get on your feet with them? Or have you been playing your original characters for quite some time and they need the dust shaken off them? Perhaps you have no idea what "character" means? If any of these questions awaken a little light in you, you'll probably need to come see how Mick is able to draw completely unique, funny, viable, human characters out of just about anyone. In this workshop, Mic encourages the participants to use their fun and playfulness as a creative catalyst, then to be bigger than maybe they thought possible so as to make themselves accessible to an audience. Playing a character is not hiding behind and being lost in the characterization but finding the freedom to play someone else. What's your character?

A dynamic, physical and musical theatre training that aims for the heart, awakens the spirit and opens the mind’s eye. Led by actor - director - musicians, Anna-Helena McLean (UK) and Christopher Sivertsen (Norway), this work draws on elements of the renowned Polish companies Gardzienice and Song of the Goat training, acrobatic partner exercises, the art of gesture, indigenous folk & gypsy songs and original music to explore archetypes in Shakespeare’s plays. Participants will work on a scene and character from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The workshop aims to ignite a spark of inspiration in each individual, opening the body, thought and emotion through the group experience. The practice will be conducted in English but texts can be worked in the participant’s first language. This workshop is suitable for professionals and students of music, dance and theatre as well as practitioners interested in a psycho-physical approach to performance and text.
Anna-Helena is trained in classical cello, holding a BA Hons in Music & Drama. 7 years a principal member of the Gardzienice Centre in Poland directed by W. Staniewski, played the title role in Electra (LaMama NYC; Barbican: BITE). Co-leader of the ‘Ancient Orchestra’ for 3 years from its inception, with T. Rodowicz. Runs a module on ensemble theatre and classical text with acting students at the RSAMD in Glasgow since 2004, runs workshops called Actor - Chorus - Text with international collaborators and is artistic director of Moon Fool based in the UK. Anna-Helena directed The Lear in 2006, based on Shakespeare’s original, performed in Christopher Sivertsen's Awake Project studio version in 2009 and is currently performing in a devised adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream called Moon Fool - ill met by moonlight, touring UK Feb/March 2010.
Christopher Sivertsen is the founder and artistic director of the international theatre company The Awake Project. He was a principal performer with the polish Teatr Piesn Kozla (Song of the Goat Theatre) for seven years and is co-founder and Associate Artist of Timberlake Wertenbaker and Irina Brown's Natural Perspective Theatre Company and Associate Artist of Au Brana Cultural Centre in southern France. Christopher leads his own Breathing performer workshops all over the world (recently at LUME Teatro in Brazil and ARTEL in Los Angeles) He has taught and directed at RADA (London) and is currently playing Oberon in Moon Fool and Trestle Theatre's Ill Met by Moonlight touring the UK.
PREVIOUS WORKSHOP FEEDBACK: "I have been amazed at how the work you did with us has really transformed my acting. I can't believe how much it's opened me up" Acting student Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, UK
"It is the huge amount of energy that we could feel in the workshop. Understanding of each other; responding to them through exercises, gave the feeling of oneness and respect to each individual. Every single person was beautiful while exploring the text and while doing their acrobatic presentations" Acting student National School of Delhi, India
"The meeting of Christopher and Anna-Helena's backgrounds immediately creates something exciting, new, beautiful, and complete. The amount that they impart to the group - in terms of physical and vocal training in only a few days is testament... to your natural synchronicity. Really, you work excellently together both as performers and as joint-leaders... you meet creatively so completely ... " Actor of Vanishing Point Theatre, UK
Poi with Claire de Luxe.
Poi was an ancient Maori art used for dance, play, agility, and self-defense training. Today, poi has developed into a dynamic and complex art form that is often combined with fire. Here, poi is taught with an eye for movement as opposed to simply a series of static tricks to be mastered. Class includes warm-up and cool-down as well as plenty of opportunity for questions, improvisation, and experimentation. We will spin and move to a variety of music to encourage different styles and flow. We introduce and review basic fire safety methods, and the last class always includes the opportunity to light up (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios).
Winter poi sessions are starting the first week of 2010! Please register ASAP to reserve your spot.
Email ddzzee@gmail.com
All sessions are 10 weeks, with the last class being a fire performance class.
Poi 3 and Poi 4: Tuesdays 8:00-9:30
Poi 2: Wednesdays 6:30-8:00
Tuesdays January 6 - March 2. Fire class date TBD.
Wednesdays January 7 - March 3. Fire class date TBD.
At Triskelion Arts, Studio B
Please try to attend all of your classes, as poi is a vocabulary based on building blocks. If you MUST miss a class, you can make it up (up to two only) during this session only by attending another level class.
Poi 2
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of simple poi moves. We continue adding to our poi vocabulary, building transitions, and facilitating experimentation.
Poi 3
Students should be comfortable with basic poi vocabulary. We will be building on the basics to develop a comfort and freedom with flow, layering moves on top of one another to begin to create true flow with the poi. Stalls, turns, and transitions will be essential. We will also begin exploring new categories of moves to keep your technique exciting.
Poi 4
A lot of focus will be spent this session on choreography, sequencing moves, transitions, and experimenting with movement. We will do drills to open up new patterns within old moves and work on opening up the possibilities of poi play within the context of the framework you already know.
**Note: Poi 3 and Poi 4 will meet in the same time period. Classes will be on opposite sides of the room and separate instruction will be given to each side, with personal attention given in equal measure.
Enrollment:
Cost is $180 for the 10-week session. A payment of $90 via Google Checkout will confirm your enrollment (I will send you an invoice when you register). The remaining balance can be paid on the first day of class.
"I always found Claire's poi classes really inspiring because I don't consider spinning poi easy at all and I'm not always good at taking on challenges. But there was never any sort of pressure or judgment in her classes regardless of my attitude on any given day. And she is very honest and genuine in her own exploration and learning process as it goes on side by side with her students. I loved it, and I look forward to taking more poi clases in 2010!"
